Dear Centre Members, Aligned HDR Colleagues, and Allied Members,

This week Peta writes from WA where she is visiting her family while Jo is in the throes of leading a theatre production. Life is full, and there are plenty of opportunities to fill your research cup in the CRF news below.

In case you’ve missed it, the next On Country Day is coming up on 10th October, a nature journaling workshop with Australian novelist and award winning nature writer Inga Simpson to be held at the You Yangs Regional Park. We are providing some information below so you can get it in your calendar, with more detail to come. We continue our language practice and many of us have been engaging in the Decolonising Knowledges and Practises reading group – details about the next one are below.

As we continue to experience times of change at Deakin it is important to be kind… to all but also (and especially) to ourselves. CRF member Eve Mayes included a great signature statement that serves as a strong reminder for us all…

I am heartened by the recent changes to the Fair Work Act for all of us, summarised in Deakin’s SDVC’s Academic’s email on 31/7/24: “Upcoming changes to the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) see the introduction of the ‘right to disconnect’, which took effect on 26 August 2024. The University is committed to supporting wellbeing and encourages all staff to maintain a healthy work-life balance. You all have a right to disconnect from work at the conclusion of your usual working day. There is no expectation on behalf of the University to respond to students, colleagues or third parties outside your usual working day or availability. This applies to all forms of communication including emails, phone calls, texts and work-related messaging platforms such as Microsoft Teams. To set clear expectations, we recommend staff notify students and colleagues of their usual availability via email signatures, teaching materials and the like.”

Best wishes to all and lets collaborate to enact the fair work practices we are entitled to.

Globata!
