Monday 9th September 2024
Dear Centre Members, Aligned HDR Colleagues, and Allied Members,
Today (9th September) is World EV day. Do a little thought experiment with your colleagues/family… discuss what might our lives be like now – if the electric car had been developed instead of the combustion engine (yes – electric cars were around in the beginning – see here). And what if, in the early 2000 the EV was allowed to be mainstreamed. Have you seen the 2006 movie Who Killed The Electric Car? (we wanted to link to it here for your ease of viewing – but it is very hard to find online…. see here). A healthy scepticism regarding how decisions get made and who controls the power is necessary. Damon Gameau named it in his Climate Change Education Summit – Speaker Series webinar (see here).
Speaking of the CRF hosted CCE Summit project we have some really interesting speakers coming up soon: Prof Marcia McKenzie, Prof Yin Paradies, Joey Thompson – SS4C, and Senator Alegra Spender with more being signed up soon. Have you watched the recording of Eve Mayes and the Striking Voices team Natasha Abhayawickrama and Netta Maiava with Grace Vegesana from AYCC? This Speaker Series has developed into an impressive repository of perspectives. Have you registered for the Summit on the 18th October? Please do – see here.
The Third week in October is the Global Climate Change Week (see here) – culminating in the CCE Summit! Great planning or coincidence??
This week we share a long list of great activities you might choose to be involved with:
- Decolonising Knowledges and Practices – Reading Group
- CRF HDR CO-LAB – invitation to join this week
- Ethics in Turbulent Times: How to Bring Society to Higher Ground
And many that are coming in the next few weeks…. There is a lot to learn about.
The CRF is also initiating two new strategies: The Turbo Charger and the Post Doctoral Support. Take a look and see if you have some suggestions or could benefit from these strategies.
A shout-out to CRF Co-Director Jo Raphael and CRF member Joanne O’Mara for their contribution to the Conversation this last week. See here. What’s the point of drama class? It teaches the workplace skills employers want, for a start… And lastly: let’s not underestimate the sheer joy that comes of being creative, of expressing yourself, and the thrill of presenting to an audience.
And to end our welcome with a bit of interest about food… consider the origins of your favourite foods – see here.
This week we all want to ask and be asked… RU OK? Join on the 12th September at 12pm for an online seminar – See here. Where a splash of yellow to invite discussion.
